A Strawberry Elf for a Beautiful Summer
I found Miss Berry hiding in the nook of the old olive tree at the back of the garden. The morning was still young and I was trying to tame the tall grasses in preparation for our long absence. At first, I thought it was just another of the little beings that live near the crook of the fig tree. But I was wrong.
You see, the fig tree people are usually very shy and wear mostly green and purple clothes. They come out mostly at night and you will be hard pressed to find one napping in broad daylight. Once I noticed the pink strawberry helmet I knew we had an illustrious visitor. I stood quiet as best I could, trying to appease my thumping heart as it had been way too long since I had the pleasure of a visiting Strawberry Elf.
They are usually very chatty and I was hoping for a bit of the same. Miss Berry introduced herself but stood motionless, as if inspecting my motives. She did not move and I did not move. I let her know my name, my provenance and stated what I was doing in the back garden. I apologized for any inconvenience and gave her a full confession of ignorance as to her location. I said I would have never disturbed her, should I’ve known she had taken residence at our humble abode.
She patiently endured this banter and as if agreeing with me, showed me her little siblings. I deemed her too young to be in the care of such babies but what do I know? I offered them shelter under the orange grove, for as long as they wanted, letting her know I still needed to clear the garden a little more before our departure.
She seemed to enjoy my predicament and agreed to move one terrace down, to the calming shade of the orange trees. There were tall grasses there as well and her little siblings looked around in wonder at the swaying wild oats and the towering calla lilies.
After a little while the babies fell asleep again and Miss Berry decided to explore the front garden.
She admired the birds of paradise, the roses and the hibiscus. But once she spied the hydrangea she was, like me, immediately seduced by their grand splendour.
She started opening up more and more as she played with the flowers, inspecting all the petals and telling me her story. I had long abandoned the idea of taming the garden and decided to follow her around to hear more about how she ended up at our house, seeing as I could not find any wild strawberry plants around. I was under the wrong impression the elves only came with the wild plants.
I wasn’t aware that just behind our garden, one of our neighbours grows strawberries in many pots and that is what attracted her in the first place. Their fragrance brought her in. Seeing the neighbour also has a loyal guardian of the feline variety, Miss Berry decided not to take her chances with the babies and went to nap instead in our olive tree. I could thank my lucky stars every day!
She continued her story and it was time for a little snack. She let me take them inside the house where I offered them orange slices, a little bit of honey and tiny morsels of fresh bread. Once they were full, she grabbed her babies, thanked me for the hospitality and left.
I sure hope they come and visit again and to encourage them I plan to put as many strawberry seedlings around me as I can. Who knew?
Miss Berry and her two little baby siblings are looking for adoption. If you would like to bring them into your home, please read on for more details 🍓.
Miss Berry is a natural fiber art doll, sculpted and stuffed in wool with cotton knit skin. Her eyes are embroidered in green floss, freckles hand painted and rosy glow added with red beeswax. Her hair is made of Mohair curls and can be styled normally, though I like to use my fingers to style it best. She measures 13” tall and has a little bit of wire inside her elf ears. Her head rotates like my Petite Figs, but she is made with a unique pattern.
She wears a white linen dress with cotton trim, cotton bloomers with a rose made of ribbon, a pink linen and merino helmet in the shape of a strawberry, with embroidery details and long cotton lace ties, as well as an apron dress made in heavier weight linen that cinches with ribbon at the sides and snaps on the velvet straps. Her pink little corduroy boots have elastic ties for easy fit.
She comes with her two baby siblings, made in cotton velour, stuffed with wool, little strawberry hats and wool felt capes. The babies measure 3” tall from point of hat to bottom of body.
This is a set of natural fiber art dolls suitable for older children 12+ or adult doll collectors.
