Baby Rose in Her Sweet Pinkness
I’ve been meaning to share little Baby Rose with you all but so much has been going on that time has run away with my best intentions. Nevertheless, here I am.
When the request came in for me to make a doll inspired by Kasja, I was quite excited. It’s not usual to get requests for baby custom dolls and I was (I guess) craving making a baby because I enjoyed it so very much.
I updated the pattern a little bit, by adding needle-felted lips, no weight and perhaps slightly chubbier cheeks, but other than that, the pattern is exactly made as the doll in this doll making e-book of Yours Truly. If you are keen to make your own Waldorf-style baby doll then that pattern can help you out and teach you a ton!
I was also delighted her new Mom decided to go with the tried-and-tested way to make baby hair for Waldorf-inspired dolls: a brushed-Mohair wig. Though I feel slightly bad because I actually don’t really brush the wigs to give them the hairy halo 😌, I use a technique in which you pull the Mohair yarn at every single stitch, in order to create these beautiful heads of hair.
You can see a little behind-the-scenes of what the wigs look like before I sew them onto the doll’s head over here. I made a wee reel for Instagram to show you and give you some handy tips when working with dollmaking Mohair yarn.
As you can see Baby Rose has a few items in her wardrobe. I made her an old-fashioned dress with short yoke and puffed 3/4 length sleeves with elastic so they can stay put. For this dress I used a beautiful Portuguese cotton double-gauze in a warm pink with tiny flowers.
Then I made her linen bloomers, also with tiny elastic both on the waist and legs for cosy fit. Plus a nice and soft cotton velour diaper.
Her Mom is quite excited to receive Baby Rose so she went ahead and bought both the sewing and the knitted layette, to get started right away making a wardrobe for her sweet baby.
Since there is no actual t-shirt in there and she started knitting the short-alls, she asked me to make one for Baby Rose and I promptly did, using the most fantastic organic cotton pointelle.
I love using cotton pointelle for shirts and for underwear, but this one is also a double-knit so it is more stable than the single jersey. Love both stuff.
I got the itch to knit for her too, so I made her a slightly ‘new’ design of baby shoes: maryjanes in garter stitch, to match her sweet pointy bonnet, which I decorated with a wool felt bead.
These little shoes are knit from the bottom up, you work the sole first and then go up the foot, then you decrease a little bit for the toe and bind off the stitches in the middle and knit a wee bit for the ankles. They have straps and close with buttons.
She looks adorable in them so I might make some for Baby Fox, who is very excited that her online class is coming later this month and she will get to meet more “online siblings” soon! Wish me luck enlarging the pattern for her.
I now need to say good-bye to this little sweetheart and send her home. We bought her a cosy box to travel in and I just made her a new lace bonnet. I will show you soon on Instagram what it looks like, for now you can see the one I made for Baby Fox here.
Since I have babies on my mind, I am editing a video for YouTube on how I like to make different styles of baby hair. Once it’s ready I will pop a link here too. Don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss it.
Thank you so much for coming to visit Baby Rose. We wish her a safe journey and a life full of lovingly made hand-knits and snuggles.
Thank you so much Suzanne, for allowing me the time and chance to see this pretty baby come out of my hands. We hope she brings you joy!
