Lorna and Felipa, Of Memories and Rain

Lorna and Felipa, Of Memories and Rain

Lorna was bored, a deep, sighing-loudly kind of bored that only a relentless downpour could bring. Outside, the world was a blurry, mushy mess of grey and green, utterly uninviting for puddle-jumping or snail races. "What's a girl to do, Felipa?" she murmured, turning to her friendly fox, whose embroidered eyes seemed to offer a silent, understanding agreement. "Looks like it's up to us to make our own fun."

To pass the time, she decided to play games.

First they played a few games of cribbage and when they were tired of it and still the rain was pelting the windows, they moved to rummy. Not enough players, complained Lorna, who was an adept board game aficionado.

She started looking for the chessboard. The old one she had from her Grandpa, not the one her Aunt Alice had given her for her birthday. She equated that board to bribery, knowing full well that Aunt Alice wanted the old board like nothing else.

The afternoon brought a little chill and she went to get her vest. Oh! How she loved this little vest, made for her by Grandma with the leftover yarn from another vest she made for Grandpa. Grandma added little bits of pink, per Lorna’s request.

She loved having things from them, it reminded her of her visits to their house, where she spent a couple of weeks every year, during the summer holidays.

She was little then, and she observed keenly their comings and goings.

Grandpa, cleaning the boat and preparing for a day of fishing on the lake. Grandma making snacks and always a pot of soup on the back burner. She liked to dowse thick dumplings on her soup, much to Lorna’s pleasure.

In the afternoons they would play games. They taught her how to play bridge, backgammon and chess of course. She taught them to play Operation, Monopoly and Settlers of Catan.

They also taught her other helpful things. Grandma taught her to make popcorn and cheese toast. Grandpa taught her to bait the hook with slimy worms, where to pick the fattest berries in the forest and how to climb up a tree safely.

Now they were gone but at least she had Felipa, who was an adept student at parlor games and was learning much too quickly.

If only the rain would stop, they could go outside and race snails. Their favourite thing to do after the rain.

Lorna smiled, imagining all the adventures still to come, rain or shine. She knew that even on the dreariest days, with a good friend by your side and a vivid imagination, every moment could be a game waiting to happen.

Their afternoon of games had filled the quiet house with echoes of laughter and cherished memories. Perhaps, she thought, it was time for these stories, and these friends, to find new ears and new adventures.

Lorna and Felipa embody comfort, companionship, and a world of cherished memories. They are seeking a special home where they can bring their gentle presence and inspire new tales.

Lorna has been my Autumn muse this year. Since the moment I started thinking of her, working patiently in the studio to bring her to life, she has whispered to me through wool yarn, suede, brass buckles and plaid.

She is an all-natural fiber art doll, made in my Petite Fig style at 16” tall, sculpted entirely in wool with cotton skin. Her eyes are embroidered and part of her face is painted and smacked with multicolour freckles. Her hair is an auburn shade of brown Mohair and is curly by nature. She likes to wear it in braids but it can be styled many different ways.

Lorna wears a linen blouse in a rust shade, the colour of dried fireweed leaves in Autumn. Her skirt is fashioned after those lovely Scottish kilts, but with a modern twist. It closes with leather straps and buckles.

She has girly underpants, warm socks and wool boots. Her Grandma made her a woollen vest, that closes with snaps and also a pink beret with a ginormous pom.

Her friendly fox Felipa is made of cotton velveteen and stuffed with wool. She wears a green alpaca collar and is thread-jointed for fun and games.

Great attention to detail and harmony was paid in their creation. From her face sculpting and embroidery, to her hair, clothing and friend. If you want to take a peek on her clothes, watch this little reel on Instagram.
