Little Wednesday And Her Friend Thursday: Two Fiber Art Dolls Ready To Play

Little Wednesday And Her Friend Thursday: Two Fiber Art Dolls Ready To Play

As luck would have it, we are exploring our creative spirit through many kinds of adventures this year. With the crusty leaves and foggy mornings, we turned to more taciturn and spooky themes and therefore we drew inspiration from a well-known character: Wednesday Addams.

As you probably know already, I don’t like reproducing things to a T. I like to gather ideas, inspiration and follow wherever the dolls may take me. It’s one of the reasons I don’t replicate the sculpted faces I make.

Sometimes I incorporate specific details, sometimes I purposely leave them out in order to create something truer to the spirit of my dolls.

In the case of Wednesday, I wanted to create a somber expression, a bit mournful, a bit quiet, but not entirely sad. I don’t know why I struggle with giving my dolls a sad expression, I just feel too mean to forever lock them in a sad emotion.

I then sculpted Wednesday with what I call a ‘mirror expression’: she can be quiet, she can also be melancholic. It depends on the angle that you look at her. She can even have a machiavellian smile!

Most of the time to me she looks very serious, concentrated, purposeful. As if she is inquiring what you’re up to. As if she is daydreaming…

I knew I wanted to give her a friend, to confide in and trust. A baby doll in the vein of Pubert wasn’t exactly what I was thinking of.

After a doll conclave we asserted she needed an animal friend, and rats beings one of her favourites, I set out to create a rag-doll inspired by said rodents.

So Thursday was born. I made her to sit nicely on Wednesday’s lap but large enough to feel like a good-sized friend. Not a pet, not a toy. A sidekick!

Seeing as we now house two teenagers in the home, we are prodded constantly to sit and watch series of teen-dramas on the television and the new version of Wednesday came to our aid.

The inspiration was born: a girl in a boarding school with an old-fashioned uniform was the idea behind one of her outfits.

A knife-pleated long skirt and matching suit jacket with large lapels. We changed the colour scheme slightly as well as the design, but the general Nevermore idea is there.

A white shirt with a black tie, a pocket watch and a front school badge.

Striped socks were also a ‘must have’ element as well as braided hair-do’s. Chunky boots seemed to be the preferred shoe option for her.

Little Wednesday came to life! Not the Wednesday that I witnessed growing up, not entirely the Wednesday my children think of, but my Little Wednesday: a quiet girl with her own adventures to live.

She strives me as an equal fan of Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley. Though she is currently reading Wuthering Heights, who knew?

I believe because she is inspired by such a known character, everyone will have their own idea of what she’s all about, so there is little for me to add.

She can be your own version of Wednesday, the one you grew up with…or she can be a new Wednesday, one that likes to play with you and take you on haunted jaunts through a cemetery, carve pumpkins with scary faces and bake nasty brews in the kitchen…preferably with smoke billowing down while an owl sits in the corner of the living room and a top-hatted crow helps mince the worms…

Wednesday is an art doll, made in my Mannikin style. A doll type I created back in 2013 and that I have slowly being upgrading and experimenting with.

She is 16” tall and of extremely petite construction. She is sculpted over armatures and has joints as well. She is fully poseable and articulated.

She is made with wool inside and cotton skin, her hair is made of mohair.

Her ratty friend is stuffed with wool, she is distressed and has raw seams for added texture. The clothing on Thursday is not removable: a cashmere turtle-neck sweater, striped body suit and lace skirt. She stands 7” tall.

Wednesday comes with a double-knitted dress made with repurposed fabric, a lace underskirt, peter pan collar and a long black bow.

She has jersey socks, boots (not made by me), old-fashioned bloomers and a hair piece that adds more fringe to her hair style. This hair piece is removable and can help to keep her braids up.

She also has a full uniform: long pleated skirt, white shirt, black tie and suit jacket. All items close with sewn-in snaps.

If you would like to add Miss Wednesday and her ratty friend Thursday to your doll family, please enter your details in the form below.

- Miss Wednesday and her little friend Thursday have now found a loving home. We thank everyone for their willingness to house these taciturn wool children and hope that the upcoming dolls serve as balm for the broken hearts ❤️ Thank you so much for your support.

We wish you the best of luck if you are willing to give Miss Wednesday a home. Just remember:

Monday’s child is fair of face
Tuesday’s child is full of grace
Wednesday’s child is full of woe
Thursday’s child has far to go…

Thank you so much for your kind words on Wednesday and Thursday. We hope they find their path in life and they bring as much joy (and woe) to others as they brought to us.

See you on Sunday.
