I needed a gentle “break”…ha!…from working on a very time-consuming custom doll, who I must confess has turned into the love of my life. I am not sure how I will ever send him home to his Mom, but while I needed time to ponder some aspects of his creation, I decided to dive into the cashmere pile and make four little dolls for you!

Whenever life gets a little rough around the edges I always turn to the Wee Babies. There is something quite magical and especial about them.

I am not sure if it’s the soft body, the simple face sculpting, the fact they have wee hats with ears, or the cashmere, lambswool, angora, etc. that I make them with.

Whatever it is I am ever so glad I designed this doll (back in 2010!) because my hands never tire of making them. They do hurt after a big group, but if I keep it simple and make small groups is not too bad.

Initially I thought I would turn them into full-fledged cupids, with wings and all…but then I wanted them to have their traditional ‘Wee Baby’ hat, so it didn’t look right.

Therefore we turned to giving them squishy red hearts with matching collars (or are those capes?). I trimmed the collars with heart lace and now they look positively endearing. See why I keep making them?

These little dolls (9” tall) are the perfect friends to take on nature walks, or if you are scared they will get dirty up the mountain, then pop them next to you as you watch a lovely movie.

I keep them close to me when I’m a little stressed out (I shall be able to tell you very soon what is going on in this neck of the woods) or when I just need a little pick-me-up from the day to day madness that is the Fig and Me studio.

They really do brighten the day, all piled up in a handy basket.

If you missed them or can’t afford to buy one, you can make one yourself. I published the tutorial on how to make Wee Babies quite a while ago, and while you will get a different style of hat, it wouldn’t be too difficult to change the length of the ears.

Make them as bunnies for the coming Easter celebrations, or give them bear ears for the Fall. The choice is yours. All you need is a cashmere or lambswool sweater, some wool and doll skin fabric and you’re off to the races.

If you want to buy one of these little Valentine dolls, please find them in my online shop.

I will have another small family in time for Easter, but I am not really working on them yet so I can’t tell you wether they will be lambs or bunnies, or what colours they will be or what they will be wearing.

What I can tell you without a doubt: they will be cute!
